I was recently visiting my friend Norbert in Port Townsend, Washington. If you have never been there, it is a gorgeous oasis in the Olympic National Forest. There are about 10,000 people and maybe just as many deer walking around. What makes this place so special, or one of the things besides it’s great air and access to Seattle and Vancouver BC is the amount of theatre, art and music that one finds in this small town. But that is not why I am writing about this place.
My friend Norbert is a bit of a scavenger. He can’t help himself. If there is a berry to be picked or a cherry dangling on a tree, he must reach up and grab it. Of course, from his point of view, these are pieces of nature and they are all calling to him.
One day, not so long ago, he saw a deer eating an apple from someone’s tree. Norbert decided that he too wanted an apple. So there he was standing a few feet from the deer. Side by side, human and animal were stealing apples.
