It Cost Less Than Four Dollars

It Cost Less Than Four Dollars

knew that it wouldn’t work but I was willing to try anyway. Why not?I It cost less than $4 which was discounted from a much higher price. I almost didn’t get it. In fact, I picked up it up more than once. I decided against that inner “No” because I wanted to eliminate all possibilities.

So I did. I bought the jar of European freeze dried coffee to see if I could use it in my coffee recipe. I was on a mission to make coffee chocolate.

As soon as I arrived home and parked the car, I brought the groceries in. It didn’t take me long to open the jar and smelled this “faux” coffee. (I use that word because I use organic coffee beans that I buy directly from a Madison, Wisconsin company called Just Coffee. It is exquisite, so good that I don’t bother trying other coffee because I am mostly disappointed.) The coffee jar in front of me didn’t smell that good. In fact, it was hard to detect any smell at all. So I took the next step. I made a cup of coffee.

I boiled the water and put somewhere between a teaspoon and a tablespoon of the contents that looked like little pebbles into my cup that was on the stove next to the pan of boiling water. When I poured the boiling water into the cup I could not detect any coffee. Ok maybe it was there but my sense of smell wasn’t detecting coffee. I took a sip. This is coffee? I asked myself. Maybe freeze dried coffee had changed over the decades since my grandmother used to enjoy her cup of Sanka coffee with some homemade pastries. I threw out the cup of “coffee.”

Just to make sure that it might improve my chocolate, I did decide to put a couple of tablespoons of this “coffee” into my mix. Once the mixture boiled and was placed into a glass dish it was refrigerated. It took a couple of hours for the chocolate to harden before it was removed from the refrigerator where it sat in the glass dish for 30-60 minutes before it was ever so carefully cut into small pieces.

I couldn’t wait to take a bite and so I did. Hmm. No coffee taste. My gut was right. It wouldn’t work. I turned my attention to the glass jar of the freeze dried coffee that was in the cupboard and wondered what I would do with this jar of so-called coffee that I didn’t like. Then the idea came to me. Give to to Lena. She will add enough sugar and milk into this hot beverage and won’t notice the taste. Once again my gut had spoken.
